One of the important activities that you need to be concerned with in running your business is being organized. Do whatever you need to do, run the apps and software that you want to run but the important thing is to be organzied. Scraps of paper for your bookkeeper and the Canada Revenue Agency just won't do.
One of the best investments that you can make to save yourself a lot of time and trouble is to invest in a top quality scanner. Just in case you didn't notice, paper is become replaced with digital images. What that means in that you have a soft copy rather than a hard copy. CRA is pushing in that direction (presumably other tax authortities are going that way as well) as they would like to see more documents in digital format rather rather than paper format. You'll find that a lot of reporting is transmitted to CRA electronically whether it's HST returns, payroll and corporate tax returns. This trend will not reverse itself.
So it may sound silly, but I order benefit from good software you need good hardware. When it comes to scanners I can personally recommend a unit that I have been using for a number of years now-Fujitsu. I purchased the scanner some time ago. It is remarrkably fast and easy to use even though it's coming a bit dated. It does two sided copying automatically and has been easy to use for any size of paper. Check it out here but shop around as the prices can vary widely.
In order to use Quickbooks Online and to benefit from cloud computing you're going to have to do this anyway. So why not get started right away.Organizing your papers becomes incredibly easy and I'll talk later about secure storage options online.
